Who We AreWhat We DoSearch RMIAN

Unlike defendants in the criminal justice system, individuals in immigration removal proceedings do not have the right to free legal assistance despite the complexities of U.S. immigration law and likely cultural and linguistic differences.  As a consequence, the vast majority go without legal representation.

Believing that all people should be afforded due process and an understanding of their legal rights, RMIAN strives to end this inequity by providing free immigration legal services to men and women in immigration detention and to abandoned, abused or neglected children throughout Colorado.

In 2007,  RMIAN gave 178 legal rights presentations to a total of 2,270 detained individuals from over 60 different countries, including Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belize, Bosnia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, France, Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, India, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Kenya, Kyrgistan, Laos, Liberia, Malaysia, Mali, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia,  Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, Somalia, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Zambia.

Also in 2007, RMIAN referred out 81 detention and children's cases to volunteer attorneys.

The founding of RMIAN in 2000 reflected an expansion of the work begun in 1993 as the Pro Bono Committee of the Colorado Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.  RMIAN is a Colorado nonprofit corporation and has been granted 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status.
