RMIAN has an opening for a two-year Children’s Program Attorney Fellow in RMIAN’s Children’s Program starting in January 2019.
The Children’s Program Attorney Fellow will be responsible for providing direct legal representation in immigration and related State-court proceedings for non-detained immigrant children and families in the Denver Metro Area. The attorney will represent children and families in applications before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, as well as in removal proceedings before the Denver Immigration Court. If barred in Colorado, the attorney also will provide representation in State-court proceedings related to a child’s immigration case. The attorney also will be responsible for assisting pro se children and families appearing on the Denver Immigration Court Docket.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide direct representation to approximately 60 individuals in immigration matters in the first year, and 20 additional individuals in the second year.
Conduct thorough intakes with children and their family members to ascertain immigration options.
Assist Children’s Program Staff and Managing Attorneys with case preparation and development.
Provide know-your-rights presentations at the Denver Immigration Court and assist pro se children and families.
Maintain relationships with stakeholders.
Assume general administrative responsibilities, including grant compliance, timekeeping, and case management.
Admission to state bar, preferably Colorado
Spanish fluency required – both written & oral, and demonstrated cultural competency
Strong preference for applicants with at least one year of experience in immigration law and experience working with children
Strong sense of personal initiative, ability to multi-task, and independence
Passion for RMIAN’s mission, and demonstrated commitment to social justice
Excellent oral & written communication skills, as well as legal research and writing skills
