Unaccompanied Children must be transferred to the custody of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within 72 hours of the child’s entry into the United States. For the first time, ORR will begin housing unaccompanied children in Colorado in late October 2019. RMIAN Children’s Program has an immediate opening for a Staff Attorney to provide free immigration legal services and representation to these unaccompanied children.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide know-your-rights presentations and individual legal screenings to each child within 7-10 days of their arrival at the ORR facility
Assist children reunifying with sponsors outside of Colorado with changes of address and changes of venue and refer children released to other states to legal service providers in the area of release
Represent children before the Denver Immigration Court and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services while detained and after release for those remaining in Colorado
Develop “post-18 plans” for children approaching their 18th birthday to avoid transfer to ICE custody
Work collaboratively with Children’s Program staff
Maintain relationships with shelter staff and other stakeholders
Manage administrative responsibilities, including grant compliance, and case management.
Admission to state bar, preferably Colorado
Spanish fluency required – both written & oral, and demonstrated cultural competency
Strong preference for applicants with at least one year of experience in immigration law and experience working with children and survivors of trauma and abuse
Strong sense of personal initiative, ability to multi-task, and interest in creative lawyering
Passion for RMIAN’s mission, and demonstrated commitment to social justice
Excellent oral & written communication skills, as well as legal research and writing skills
