RMIAN has two (2) immediate openings for full-time Detention Legal Orientation Program Legal Assistants to expand capacity for screening and placing cases with pro bono legal representation at the Aurora Contract Detention Facility and join its team of attorneys, social workers, and paralegals devoted to supporting LOP participants in Aurora, Colorado.
RMIAN’s LOP team conducts daily group presentations to advise participants of their rights in immigration proceedings, educate about the forms of release from detention, and explain the different defenses against deportation. Following the presentation, RMIAN conducts intakes to screen cases for possible pro bono representation – either through RMIAN’s direct representation teams or volunteer attorneys. Additionally, the LOP team is responsible for providing comprehensive pro se support, including individual sessions and group workshops, to people facing deportation proceedings without the assistance of counsel.
The Legal Orientation Program Legal Assistants will divide up the following responsibilities:
Creating daily attendance lists for Know-Your-Rights presentations at the immigration detention center in Aurora, Colorado
Conducting data entry and compiling monthly reports for RMIAN’s Legal Orientation Program
Responding to phone calls to RMIAN's hotline
Administering mailings and processing incoming mail
Inputting intake information into RMIAN’s case management software
Preparing LOP participants at the detention center in representing themselves pro se and offering group workshops to prepare people to appear in court
Supporting pro bono referrals to volunteer attorneys
Communicating with individuals who are matched with pro bono counsel
Assisting with community outreach and presentations
Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree from ABA approved paralegal program preferred
English & Spanish fluency, both written and oral, required
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and multi-task
Experience and comfort working in multicultural environments
Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced workplace
Passion for RMIAN’s mission and commitment to social justice and human rights issues
Experience or background in immigration law strongly preferred
Travel to the detention facility is required
These are both full-time, salaried, non-exempt positions. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a generous benefits package.
