During and following the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan, many Afghans, including unaccompanied children, fled Afghanistan and are now seeking asylum in the United States. Meanwhile, hundreds of people seeking protection are detained in civil immigration detention in Aurora, Colorado, where nearly 70% of people have gone unrepresented in recent years. Finally, thousands of people subjected to Remain in Mexico—a program that forces asylum seekers who arrive at the border to return to Mexico in dangerous and unstable conditions while they wait for immigration proceedings—are now in the United States and facing a whole new challenge—the prospect of an adversarial asylum hearing without counsel.

Individuals are ten times more likely to win asylum protection in the United States if they are represented by an attorney. However, the lack of appointed counsel and accelerated timelines in immigration proceedings make it incredibly challenging for children, adults in detention, and people subjected to Remain in Mexico to find legal representation to win their cases.

This training is designed for attorneys new to immigration law. RMIAN and the Justice Campaign will:

  • Screen potential pro bono cases

  • Pair attorneys with clients

  • Provide professional liability insurance to pro bono attorneys

  • Provide mentoring by experienced immigration practitioners

  • Provide legal resources, samples, and templates
