Legal Orientation Program (LOP) Team Intern

RMIAN is a nonprofit organization that provides free immigration legal and social services to individuals in immigration detention and to children and their families throughout Colorado. RMIAN is committed to providing educational opportunities for undergrad and law students interested in pursuing professions in the field of immigration advocacy.

Internship Overview:

RMIAN has an opening for an LOP Team Intern to work 12-20 hours a week beginning on Monday, August 25, 2025, or Tuesday, August 26, 2025, through the end of November 2025. RMIAN may be able to adjust end dates as well as the number of hours worked per week, but must onboard interns on one of the dates listed above. The position is based out of RMIAN’s office in Westminster, Colorado. The intern will be supervised by a staff member on RMIAN’s LOP team and will support the team.

RMIAN’s Legal Orientation Program is a Know-Your-Rights program that seeks to educate and inform individuals detained at the Aurora immigration detention facility about their rights in removal proceedings, court procedures, release options, and relief from removal. In addition to providing general information, members of the LOP team screen individual cases for referral to volunteer pro bono counsel, as well as to RMIAN direct representation staff attorneys. Additionally, the team is responsible for providing comprehensive pro se support, including individual help sessions and limited-scope representation to people facing deportation proceedings without the assistance of counsel.

While this position is unpaid, RMIAN is happy to coordinate with your academic institution if course credit can be offered for participation in this internship or to certify work for any outside funding source.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Is a student or recent graduate of an undergraduate university or college.

  • Is proficient in English and Spanish (other language proficiency will also be considered); although fluency in Spanish or another language not required for this position.

  • Is committed to the principles of human equality, treats everyone with dignity, and is able to effectively and compassionately work with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Is interested in learning more about the US immigration system and/or non-profit organizations.

  • Is competent in Microsoft Office; has administrative office experience (e.g., filing, mailing, printing, scanning, etc.) and/or experience with database systems (e.g., excel or other spreadsheet programs, project or task management software,

  • Is excited to innovate and streamline administrative processes and contribute to efficient workflow in a fast-paced environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Mail written materials to individuals detained by ICE and be involved in innovating and maintaining our pro se materials and mail system

  • Conduct factual research, including country conditions research, to bolster individuals' asylum claims in Immigration Court and provide presentations to Detention Program staff to inform culturally sensitive services

  • Assist RMIAN staff members with evidence gathering on behalf of LOP participants, including translating key evidence to English and requesting records from penal and medical institutions

  • Conduct preliminary calls with individuals detained by ICE to assess language needs and legal needs, and to propel referral to volunteer attorneys

  • Occasionally call loved ones of people detained by ICE to gather critical information

Location:

This position is in-person and based out of RMIAN’s office located in Westminster, Colorado. The position is not available remotely.

Other Experiences/Training Opportunities Included, if desired:

  • Gain a nuanced understanding of the US immigration system;

  • Observe Immigration Court hearings and debrief with attorneys about their work;

  • Observe Know-Your-Rights presentations and orientation services provided remotely to people detained at GEO/ICE Facility in Aurora;

  • Attend virtual lunches with attorneys, social workers, paralegals, or other staff members depending on your interests to gain insight into different career paths.
