Pro Bono Program

RMIAN’s robust Pro Bono Program provides free legal counsel to hundreds of detained adults and children in immigration removal proceedings each year through our network of dedicated pro bono attorneys and interpreters. Our Detention Program Pro Bono Program is in partnership with the Immigration Justice Campaign, a national initiative of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, American Immigration Council, to fight for due process and justice for detained immigrants. Training opportunities for RMIAN pro bono attorneys include annual Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs, smaller supplemental trainings, model hearing programs and ongoing mentoring. RMIAN’s staff members and RMIAN’s Pro Bono Mentoring Panel provide ongoing mentoring to volunteer attorneys. RMIAN also provides professional liability insurance to all RMIAN volunteer attorneys.

The Program works to:

  • Recruit, train, and mentor dedicated pro bono attorneys from all fields of the law to represent detained adults and children in immigration removal proceedings

  • Maintain an effective case referral system with engaged and knowledgeable pro bono attorneys

  • Share best practices with other legal service organizations who rely on pro bono assistance

My client won asylum yesterday and was released from the detention center today. The experience I got from doing her case through the clinic was life changing and I’m so happy she is a free woman. Thank you for putting me in touch with her and for all the work RMIAN does.
